Machairas Area information
The main forest type includes natural pine forests and other indigenous broad-leaved tree species, mainly maquis vegetation (4,393 ha), and reforestations (1,533 ha), as well as a small agricultural area belonging to the community of Fikardou (131 ha). The area is characterized by a varied relief with altitudes ranging from 300 m to 1,423 m (Madari).
The main geological formations of the Machairas forest belong to the Troodos ophiolite complex, including the Madari formation, the Pelendri, and the Xyliatos formations, the Mitsero sedimentary rocks, and the Kalavasos and Lefkara formations.
Machairas Monastery
Panagia Machairiotissa
Machairas Monastery is a peaceful and important religious site in the mountains of central Cyprus. Built in the 12th century, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and holds a famous icon believed to be painted by Apostle Luke. The monastery also played a key role during the EOKA struggle for independence in the 1950s, as it gave shelter to fighters. Surrounded by forest and mountain views, it is a place of faith, history, and natural beauty.
